Amongst other product categories, Philips is a global leader in Mother & child care products and is passionate about providing solutions that lead to healthier users, healthier practices, and healthier businesses. Philips’ current range of baby soothers and breast pumps already serves a large range of mothers and babies. Since this period can be very difficult and personal for new moms, Philips wants to improve upon the ease and comfort of product use and experience. Together with Next UPPS, the possibilities for ultra personalisation of breast pumps are explored based on physical, technical and emotional variations of the user domain.

Havep and its parent company Koninklijke van Puijenbroek Textiel have successfully translated the stringent requirements imposed by the authorities, employers, and our clients into a wide and specialised collection of workwear and protective wear. This includes solutions for various sectors, including chemical, installation, transport, agriculture, road construction, and emergency services. Havep is a global company, mainly serving Europe, with production units in Macedonia and Tunisia. Workwear and protective wear are becoming more personalised. However, the time-to-market needs to be improved, while full customisation on sizes/dimensions and protection is necessary. Havep is convinced that the Next UPPS, covering Advanced Manufacturing and co-creation, would accelerate the development of better-functioning personalised protection. The project will bring protective wear solutions to small and medium enterprises. – especially subcontractors in the building/infrastructure industries. Throughout the project, Havep will host the researchers of the three technical universities for case studies. Furthermore, Havep will also contribute to the project by supporting the development of prototypes and testing the value chain/fulfilment processes to realise the ultra-personalised protection workwear developed by the consortium

Washable personalised “Cast”

It is necessary to limit the mobility of broken ligaments. The current plaster solutions cause itching, result in a breeding ground for unpleasant odors and are awkward to use because they should not get wet. If the plaster doesn’t fit properly it will have an adverse effect on the healing process. A well-fitting orthosis is therefore necessary for rapid healing.

Arms are difficult to 3D scan. This is because fingers get in each other’s way in different photos and it is difficult to keep them still. If photos from different sides can be taken at exactly the same time, this problem is solved.

  • With 52 small cameras and microcontrollers, a photo can be taken.
  • Using photogrammetry software, these photos can be converted into a digital hand
  • Customised “cast” can be adjusted using a parametric model
  • A modelling program is used to calculate the occurrence of gaps
  • With a 3D printer, the cast can be printed in 1 or 2 days.

A new way to prevent ankle injuries

To prevent ankle injuries, ankle braces should have a tight fit around the ankle. Current ankle straps are rude and restrict movement in all directions, which is why they are often written off as clumsy. A customized ankle strap / shoe combination can prevent these complaints.

  •  Ankles are digitized with a  3D scanner .
  • With a  parametric model , the ankle strap can be automatically customised and the user’s initials can be placed in the model.
  • The anklets are produced with a  3D printer  .
  • Through user testing different standardised models were created for different types of athletes

An Exo-Ligament ankle brace gives a lot of freedom of movement and is quick to put on. The cord that connects the ankle brace to the shoe is not tightened as long as the user makes even movements, but blocks when there is sudden acceleration comparable to a safety belt in the car. It fits precisely around the ankle and the name of the owner is incorporated into the product. A good example of a UPPS.
